GLYCO-NUTRITIONALS
Manna Relief in USA has donated sufficient supplies of glyconutritional supplements to provide three advanced AIDS patients in Harare with daily glyconutritional supplements for 6 months. Manna Relief is the charitable arm of MannaTech which holds the patents and manufactures various lines of glyconutritional products.
Manna Relief may be contacted by email: droe@mannarelief.org

Postal: Manna Relief, PO Box 531570, Grand Prairie, TX 75052, USA.
Further information about MannaTech products is available on the MannaTech website at : http://mannatech.com
Donation of the glyconutritionals was kindly facilitated through the recommendation of Dr Reginald McDaniel, former Medical Director for many years of MannaTech, and presently Medical Director of Manna Relief.
The amount of glyconutritional supplements provided for each patient for the 6-months Harare trials is as follows: Each of the three patients would receive daily for 6 months;
2 Ambrotose 2 x / day.
1 PhytAloe 2 x / day.
1 PLUS 2 x / day.
1 Catalyst 2 x / day.
These products are all nutritional and therefore non-toxic, and in USA where there is high expenditure upon health needs, it would be common for an AIDS patient to have a few times this dosage. In Africa however, we need to consider the economic viability of provision of glyconutritional products to large communities over an extended time. The dosage has therefore been chosen as moderate to reflect the need in Africa for treatment to always be cost-effective.
About Glyconutritionals in General
(From a dispatch of MannaTech, the suppliers of Ambrotose (written by Dr Reg McDaniel, former Medical Director MannaTech, presently Medical Director of Manna Relief);
"Dietary suggestions offered are not meant to substitute for medical diagnosis and physician management. Micronutrients, i.e. nutraceuticals are not intended to be used to treat, cure or ameliorate a disease or abnormal condition. However, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 states that optimal nutrition has been shown by scientists to be essential for good health, to prevent disease and to restore health. Thus, normal biochemical synthesis of structure/function compounds by the cells of the body under the control of genes is supported by dietary supplementation. While micronutrients are virtually non-toxic food substances, there can be allergies and hypersensitivity to virtually any substance taken into the body. If an untoward response is experienced, dietary supplements should be discontinued."
Cell Communication and Ambrotose
(from MannaTech informational material)
Protein, fat, water, minerals and carbohydrates are chief components of the human body. For all of history, food has provided these building blocks. But scientists are still learning the functions that specific nutritional food components play in this process. As recently as this century benefits of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and phytonutrients were discovered.
While all of these nutritional substances are important to our health, we believe that, by far, the newest and most exciting scientific advance is the discovery of an additional function carbohydrates play in human health-in addition to providing simple energy. This discovery is about the function of plant-based glyconutrients in cell-to-cell communication.
Healthy bodies are comprised of many components working together in sophisticated harmony, and must have accurate internal communication to function correctly. In its most basic form, this communication occurs at the cellular level.
To maintain a healthy body, cells must "talk" to other cells. Their "language" is one of touch written in saccharides on cell surfaces. These simple sugars combine with other molecules to make glycoforms, such as glycoproteins when joined with protein, or glycolipids when joined with fats. Of the 200 monosaccharides that occur naturally in plants, 8 have been discovered to be components in cell surface glycoforms.
Like thousands of different "keys" projecting from the cell surface, they will either "unlock" the required functions of the adjoining cell or not. If the right keys are available, the body functions smoothly. If not, it does not.
Only two of the eight are commonly found in foods we eat. Our diets have changed in response to demands for quicker, cheaper methods of mass producing food. Consequently, we are not eating foods that once supplied a greater variety of these sugars.
While the body has the capacity to manufacture all of these monosaccharides from common sugars like glucose found in the diet, the conversion process is complicated, requiring energy and time as well as numerous enzymes and vitamins.
People who have inborn errors of metabolism are especially vulnerable to a breakdown in the process. Whenever these necessary monosaccharides cannot be made, communication is slowed or impaired as a result. Viruses can also interfere with our bodies' ability to make the conversions.
Ambrotose® complex, Mannatech's unique patent-pending glyco-nutrient, is a blend of specific plant-derived carbohydrates that contain monosaccharides necessary for cell-to-cell communication and glycosylation which is essential for hormone and energy production.
Other Glyconutritional Products
(Manna Relief selected the four products for the Harare trials, according to their scientific assessment of their nutritional value with respect to AIDS patients. Below are copies of promotional extracts from the Manna Tech website)
PhytAloe is a product designed to maintain good health and provide antioxidants through freeze-dried raw fruits and vegetables. A blend of freeze-dried raw fruits and vegetables and Ambrotose® complex. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, and newly discovered compounds called phytochemicals. They also contain antioxidants, which are free radical scavengers. Free radicals are highly reactive substances which may occur in the body and can be generated by lifestyle factors such as excess dietary fats, cigarette smoke, alcohol consumption, pollutants, or stress.
PLUS is a product designed to promote general well-being. Mannatech's formulation of dioscorea and Ambrotose complex. PLUS provides relief of premenstrual symptoms, menstrual cramps & helps relieve nervous tension, stress and mild anxiety.
Catalyst is one of the GlycoLEAN series of products. It is a multivitamin and mineral supplement for optimal health.
Glyconutritionals and AIDS
From an article "Final Hearing Draft" by H. Reginald McDaniel, M.D. November 14, 2001
In 1984-85 a group of symptomatic HIV-1 positive patients reported that oral aloe juice alleviated their AIDS symptoms. It was found that the active anti-viral ingredient in aloe leaf gel was polymannose. This is a micronutrient that supports synthesis of innate defence molecules that destroy multiple types of infectious agents including bacteria and viruses. The mechanism of action is not that of antibiotics that poison or block the metabolism of microorganisms. The biochemistry and immunology supported by this glyconutrient type of micronutrient-based defence is based on up-regulation of innate, natural mechanisms for protection against and destruction of micro-organisms. Thus, antibiotic resistant organisms are destroyed by this enhancement of natural defence mechanisms through optimal dietary supplementation. The exact site and step in glycoprotein synthesis within the cell where mannose of aloe origin is utilised has been defined. This led to recognising and formulating a mixture of natural saccharides (dietary sugars) known to be necessary in the golgi to provide a more efficient cellular synthesis of defence and tissue repair molecules. The current generation of glyconutrients (Ambrotose ®, Mannatech, Inc.) is 5 to 20 times more bioactive than the original aloe polymannose when it is added to the diet alone. Glyconutrients support enhancement of the general immune mechanisms and are virtually non-toxic, low cost, and are effective against common infectious agents, multiple drug-resistant nosocomial organisms, toxin producing bacteria, and are predicted to be effective against war-grade modified organisms, bacterial and viral.
Two Case Studies
Case H, 38 y/o, wm, had on his initial clinic visit HIV-1 with CD4s of 24/mm3 and elevated viral loads by PCR, 2.2 million/mm3.
Case KL , 35 y/o, wm, had a CD4 level of 7/ mm3 and 250,000 RNA pair per mm3.
Both added the current generation of necessary glyconutrients and micronutrients to their diets. Case H was on his second non-effective triple drug cocktail and patient K had refused all pharmaceutical agents. Both responded with clinical improvements and now both have non-detected viral levels of HIV-1 vRNA by ultra-PCR. Patient H has CD4 assays ranging from 350 to 450 mm3 and KL has CD4 levels currently consistently over 700 mm3.
